De Bruyne happy to share Man City role with Silva

Kevin De Bruyne says he and Manchester City team-mate David Silva are likely to share the number ten role at the Etihad Stadium. The Belgian, who arrived at Manchester City in the summer for £54million, shone in the role at Wolfsburg in one-and-a-half seasons in the Bundesliga, but Silva is the recognised star in the current City set-up. As opposed to battling each other for that spot, De Bruyne feels that he and the Spaniard are likely to “rotate” in the role, both in the starting line-up and during games. “I hope to play with him,” De Bruyne responded when asked of Silva. “With the amount of games we have, you will have some on the bench and the players who are playing also rotate a lot during the game. “Even though I played as number ten a lot at Wolfsburg, I was the guy who was drifting out a lot to the sides. In the end you have to be a little bit open-minded, not fixed on one position. “Even if you are changing a lot, as long as you are defensively in good shape, offensively it doesn’t matter.” Asked to reprise a more conservative right-wing role in his short spell at Chelsea, the 24-year-old feels that he could prosper in a more attacking set-up under Manuel Pellegrini. “Maybe Chelsea play a little bit more tactically – here they play a little more rounded. It’s different. “It also depends how you are mentally in your head. Mental is also a lot of things that can help you as a player. I think I’ve grown also in that part since I was young.

Surely the salient question raised by the scandal of Fifa Secretary General Jerome Valcke and the World Cup tickets is what was he doing in the job at all?

You may remember that when he was not in such an exalted position, he and the grotesque Chuck Blazer – he too was implicated deeply in corruption – appeared in a New York court on behalf of Fifa, trying to wrest the rights for the ensuing World Cup away from the holders MasterCard in favour of Visa. The woman judge scornfully threw out their case and accused them both of lying.

Valcke then flew back to Zurich and was briefly suspended. But in no time at all the smoke cleared and he was promoted to his present role. That was shocking enough, but the worst of it, arguably, was that not a peep of protest came from anywhere. No national association or federation deemed it apposite to criticise such a ludicrous and perverse promotion. Our own Football Association was among the totality of ruling bodies which had nothing to say or to object.

Which alas takes us to the abysmal phenomenon of Joao Havelange, in fact a far more serious and quite inexplicable case, that this greedy, corrupt and rapacious man remaining President of Fifa for no fewer than 24 years. By comparison, Valcke’s alleged offence, conspiring so profitably with one Benny Alon of JB Sports Marketing to flog World Cup tickets for as much as five times their value, seems almost trivial.

It isn’t of course: far from it. But the outrage of the offence itself surely knocks one more nail into Sepp Blatter’s coffin. How, in the name of good sense and morality could he have promoted Valcke after his humiliation in that New York court?

And to reiterate, how could the football authorities at large remain silent and unconcerned

Gomis boosts Swans' Euro hopes

Arsene Wenger is looking to lead his side to their highest Premier League finish in 10 years but their chances were dealt a blow as Gomis' 85th-minute header crossed the line, despite David Ospina's attempt to claw it away.

Arsenal protested the ball had not gone in but referee Kevin Friend, aided by goal-line technology, was in no doubt as the goal stood to send Swansea to victory.

Garry Monk’s side, who are now well in with a chance of Europa League qualification with two games remaining, also had former Arsenal goalkeeper Lukas Fabianski to thank for their victory as he made a string of excellent saves in the second half.

In particular, a fine double save from Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott helped send the Gunners to a first league defeat in 10 and hand Swansea only their second league double over Arsenal.

For the first time in Wenger’s reign he named the same starting line-up for the fifth consecutive Premier League game after Aaron Ramsey was passed fit following a leg injury.

And Arsenal tried to start in the same vein that has seen them win nine of their last 10 league games as Ramsey combined with Mesut Ozil and Hector Bellerin before clipping a cross to Olivier Giroud, who headed over from 10 yards.

Monk had set up to hit Arsenal on the break and it nearly worked as Ashley Williams’s long pass nearly dropped into the path of Nathan Dyer, but Ospina was quickly off his line to head the ball to safety.

Arsenal were trying to pass their way through but it was to Swansea’s credit that all the hosts could muster was Giroud’s curled effort from 25 yards which flew wide of Fabianski’s goal.

The former Arsenal man would have been expecting a busier night but the Gunners failed to register a single shot on target in the first half. However, with 21 of the last 22 goals in this fixture in all competitions coming in the second half of the match, Wenger would have been pleading for patience from his troops and a much improved performance.

And that is what he got as Arsenal probed to make the breakthrough with Bellerin breaking free down the right before crossing for Giroud, but he was beaten to the ball by Federico Fernandez.

Giroud was again in the action in the 59th minute but the impressive Fabianki was in the way, getting down well to his right to make a smart save.

Wenger sent for reinforcements in Jack Wilshere and Walcott and the latter could have made an instant impact when sending Bellerin’s cross goalwards, but Fabianski was well positioned to keep his goal intact.

Ramsey also tested his former team-mate but the keeper's best moment came in the 78th minute as he first denied Sanchez from close range and then got up to keep Walcott’s effort out.

It got even better for Swansea with just five minutes remaining as Gomis struck the only goal of the match.

The Frenchman was the matchwinner when the two sides met earlier in the season and he was a thorn in Arsenal’s side again as he rose to head Jefferson Montero’s shot over the line. Ospina got across to claw the ball away but it was not enough as Friend awarded the goal with the help of goal line technology.

It sent Arsenal crashing to their first defeat in 10 league matches as they bid to finish in second place behind champions Chelsea. Wenger’s men, who stay third, are now three points behind Manchester City with a game in hand but face Manchester United, who are just two points behind, at the weekend.

Victory moves Swansea, who are a point behind Southampton in seventh and two points behind Tottenham in sixth, firmly into the race for the Europa League as they became the first side to complete a league double against Arsenal this season.

Ramsey: Three wins for saftey

Rangers are two points from safety ahead of Saturday’s match against West Ham at Loftus Road, while relegation rivals Leicester travel to fellow-strugglers Burnley.

But Ramsey believes his side can accumulate enough points from their closing fixtures - trips to Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester and a home game against Newcastle - to preserve their Premier League status.

“They are all key now in the last month,” he said. “We are not really worrying about what the other teams are doing, we know we have just got to get some positive results in the next month.

“I just care if we win to be honest and despite whatever else happens in the mix, we can only take of our own game really, and if we don’t get good results it’s not going to matter what they do.

'Concentration'

“I’m not sure (what is needed to avoid relegation), if you win three games you are obviously going to stay up but I’m not sure. As long as we’re above the line come the end of May, I’ll be happy.

Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea was the seventh time QPR have conceded a goal in the last 10 minutes of a league match this year, a trend Ramsey admitted his side must end.

“It’s a lack of continual concentration,” he said. “If you look at the Premier League as a whole there’s not many teams getting slaughtered.

“Most games are quite even but the quality at the top end of the league is why those sides are there.

“We’ve conceded a lot of late goals this season and we’re not happy about that. We really do need to stop conceding those late goals and keep concentrating right to the end.”

CITY PLAN SUMMER CLEAROUT'Manchester City are prepared to offload as many as six of the team who helped to secure the Premier League title last season,' writes The Telegraph's Mark Ogden, with Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri among those whose futures are on the line.

Adding to the school of thought that Pellegrini will be kept on, Ogden claims 'senior figures at the club believe the Chilean has been let down by some high‑profile players', adding 'there is now a determination at City to clear out the club's failing big earners and recruit younger and hungrier replacements'.

Toure, Nasri, Edin Dzeko, Gael Clichy, Aleksandar Kolarov and Stevan Jovetic are the six players listed as potential fall guys, with Wolfsburg's Kevin De Bruyne (23), Juventus' Paul Pogba (22), Liverpool's Raheem Sterling (20) and Everton's Ross Barkley (21) said to be on the list of targets to replace the under-performing stars.

Inter Milan are reportedly interested in Toure and Kolarov, while City have apparently received 'numerous enquiries' about Jovetic. They will not, however, consider selling captain Vincent Kompany, Ogden writes.

While the thought of Pogba in blue might cheer up down-in-the-dumps City supporters, they are likely to be less buoyed by the Daily Mirror's claim that Tottenham's improving but still average Danny Rose is a summer target...
UNITED MOVE AHEAD IN INGS RACEThis column still finds it slightly hard to believe the Premier League's top clubs are in fact interested in signing Danny Ings this summer, but the Daily Mail reports Manchester United have become favourites to sign the striker after holding talks with Burnley.

Ings is out of contract at the end of the season, but the Clarets will be due compensation for the 22-year-old so the Mail claims United want to agree a fee with the Clarets now to steal a march on their rivals. That had allegedly been Liverpool's plan, while Manchester City, Tottenham and Real Sociedad are also listed as potential suitors.

United are said to see Ings as a future England international, with Louis van Gaal particularly impressed by his performance against United at Old Trafford in February when he scored in Burnley's 3-1 defeat.
